United's bid to land striking Anglo Derek Lilley failed to reach its expected conclusion on Wednesday.
The Oxford United marksman, whose career has seen him serve Morton, Leeds United, Hearts and Bury, had played in United's closed-doors friendly twenty-four hours earlier. Negotiations got underway immediately, and when they continued into midweek, hopes were high at Tannadice that a deal could be completed. However, the mid-afternoon press call was first postponed, then rescheduled, before finally being delayed until the morning.
There had been speculation that former Darlington and Manchester City winger Neil Heaney could have headed south to Oxford as part of the Lilley transfer package. However, Manager Alex Smith, who has been impressed by Heaney's recent form, admitted that the player is highly unlikely to be moving. Said Smith, "At one stage of the negotiations there was the possibility of Neil moving. However, I do not see that happening now."
