SIGNING TARGETS SCRUTINISED

18th January 2001

United boss Alex Smith voted the closed-doors friendly against Hearts at Tynecastle as "a more than worthwhile exercise". Not only did it offer the Tannadice Manager the opportunity to assess the talents of Latvian Valerijs Ivanovs, Spaniard Raul Sanchez and an, as of yet, unnamed English winger, it also offered the existing first team squad the chance to shrug off the effects of mid-winter rustiness.

As Alex explained, "It was very apparent that some of the players were in need of some competitive action, and, thankfully, they got it. All of which confirmed our determination all week to get a game under our belts. All three of our trialists did well, although it was maybe a bit unfair to judge the young Spaniard, as he had suffered from a stomach complaint just twenty-four hours before the game and was clearly a bit off colour."

Sanchez lasted just 45 minutes of a game which eventually ended in stalemate. But that won't prevent Alex Smith from maintaining his interest in the talented youngster from Barcelona.
