Having had various offers of trips abroad this summer, United have finally decided to 'go Dutch' for part of their pre-season training.
Alex Smith will take his first team squad to a plush training camp in the Netherlands, near to the city of Arnhem.
For many United fans, that particular location sparks off rather painful memories of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup exit at the hands of Vitesse Arnhem. The possibility of a re-match against the Dutch aces is not out of the question, but friendly fixtures for the Holland trip have not yet been finalised.
As Smith commented, "We will head out to Holland on 15th July 2001, and return one week later. Other possibilities, including a summer tournament in Austria, have been considered, but the training camp in Holland seems the best option. The facilities on offer are excellent, we hope to play three challenge games to help step up our match practice. If possible, I would like the third game to be against quality opposition, but at this stage nothing concrete has been confirmed."
The match dates have been pencilled in for the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during that week. Pre-season training itself will commence at Tannadice on June 27, with a couple of closed-door games first on the 'match-action' agenda.
