Many former team-mates of the legendary Dennis Gillespie have been paying tribute to the man who was the first United player ever to gain an international honour at any level.
Kenny Cameron, a Tannadice striker in the late 60s and early 70s, commented, "I can honestly say Dennis was one of the finest players I have played with or against. He had outstanding ability and relentless energy to run up and down the pitch all day. Consistency was his trademark and you always knew what you would get from Dennis. My abiding memory of him was his fantastic 25-yard strike in a game against Juventus over in America. Dennis was a great player on the park and a magnificent person off the park."
Gillespie, who was capped at Scottish League level in 1961, was a major player under former manager Jerry Kerr, as United steadily rose from relative obscurity in the late 50s to prominence in the 60s. The inside forward, who could also play wing-half, spent 12 years at Tannadice and was a real fans' favourite. He died on Monday after a long illness. He was 65.
