UNITED WIN IN BLUE TOON

23rd July 2001

United continued their busy pre-season schedule when many of the players who had returned from the pre-season tour of Holland and Germany on Sunday headed straight for the Balmoor Stadium in Peterhead on Monday to take part in Scott Brown's testimonial, in recognition of his ten year's service to the Blue Toon's team.

Scott's testimonial committee must have been delighted to see that
Alex Smith had selected a side which is unlikely to differ much from the side which will line up against Dundee on Saturday. Notable absentees were the soon-to-be-suspended Craig Easton, injured pair Jim Hamilton and Steven Thompson and central defender Jason De Vos.

Griffin's early attempt on goal was well held by Peterhead's Pirie but the home 'keeper was unable to thwart a United move in the eleventh minute when a Hamilton back-heal allowed Venetis to take the ball round the keeper to open the scoring.

Welcome returnee Jim Paterson's dangerous crosses from the left were a feature of the match, causing problems for the Peterhead defence throughout and only the defiant Pirie kept the lead to one.

It was not all one-way traffic and in the sixty-third minute the home team nearly drew level when King's shot from over thirty yards out evaded Gallacher but hit the post. Five minutes later Pirie succumbed to an injury sustained earlier and had to be taken off.

Replacement keeper Sweeney proved to be an equally effective stopper
but he was beaten by a Charlie Miller shot in the 77th minute to put United 2-0, and that's the way it stayed.

United Line-up - Gallacher, McCunnie, Lauchlan(Buchan), Aljofree, Venetis(Hannah), Griffin, Fullarton(McIntyre), Hamilton, Paterson, Lilley, Miller.
