Ian Redford - Hall of Fame Inductee 2017

17th March 2017

Dundee United host their 2017 Hall of Fame dinner tonight at the Invercarse Hotel, and the event is sold out. There are four new inductees this year, and in this article, we look at European hero Ian Redford. Ian began his career with Dundee and after earning a reputation as a bright young star signed for Rangers.  He won medals in the Scottish Cup and League Cup (twice) when playing for Rangers against United and was something of a nemesis to the Terrors before joining. He had also won Scotland youth and Under-21 caps. He arrived at Tannadice in August 1985 for a fee of £70,000 and went on to make 155 appearances, scoring 32 goals. Perhaps his most famous moment being the clinching goal in the 2-0 away victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Uefa Cup semi-final. With United, he picked up runners-up medals in the Scottish Cup and UEFA Cup. During his three years at Tannadice, he was a regular in the lineup and an influential player, particularly on the European stage seemed to enjoy so much. He left Tannadice in November 1988 to join Ipswich Town for around £200,000 and finished a highly successful football career with another league cup winners medal in 1995 with Raith Rovers. Ian tragically passed away in 2014. Tonight, Iain's name will sit proudly alongside his fellow Hall of Famers on the roll of honour, as his family accept the award on his behalf.
