ALEX SMITH OPTIMISTIC ABOUT YOUTH TALENT AT UNITED

18th October 2001

United's SFA Youth Cup Third Round meeting with Alloa at Tannadice last night handed boss Alex Smith an appropriate opportunity to highlight the progress being made by his youngsters. Ever keen to see the Tannadice kids advance through the ranks, Smith reckoned the current batch of teenagers are showing all the attributes required to make the eventual step-up to the top squad.

"Jamie McCunnie is the perfect example of the teenage talent at Tannadice just now", said Smith. "He's now established at first team level, but the lads in the youth team are all showing great promise, too. Ogunmade and O'Donnell are providing flair on the flanks and McGowan is a wee striker who knows the way to the goal. McKenzie handles himself well, and in John Shine we have a jovial Irish lad with a great attitude, who's been playing well at the back. We already know of Wilson's defensive qualities, and in midfield, Holmes is another who has impressed me. Obviously there are other great prospects I've not specifically mentioned, but it gives me great pleasure to watch all of the youth team squad progress they way they are doing."
