Dundee United's Team Manager Alex Smith was understandably delighted with the victory at Tynecastle, the win ending a run of four consecutive defeats in the SPL that had brought the Club's excellent start to the campaign to a halt.
Alex commented, "It was a welcome win. One that we had to fight very hard for and show real character to achieve. Last year we would have probably gone on to lose this match rather than have gone on to win it. Having lost heavily the week before to Rangers, the midweek win over Dumbarton in the CIS Cup was the first step on the road to recovery and the three points at Hearts consolidated this. It goes along way to restoring confidence and self belief and will improve team moral."
Alex was praiseworthy of Steven Thompson, scorer of the 90th minute winner against the Jambos. He said " Tommo's goal was very pleasing. The timing of it was so final in terms of the result. It was also pleasing in that it was one of our own reared players who scored it. Hopefully the netting of such a vital goal will enhance Steven's self confidence and belief."
The average age of the United team and in particular the defence was another positive aspect to the team's performance in Edinburgh. "The whole team is on the young side but the back four and keeper are all either in their teens or very early twenties," commented Alex. "It augurs well for the future."
