UNITED CRASH OUT OF YOUTH CUP

23rd November 2001

Having defeated the Aberdeen Under-18 team one month ago by a score of 6-0, the United Under-18's crashed out of the SFA Youth Cup at Tannadice Park last night to the young Reds by the almost mirror image scoreline of 1-6.

The United team that lined up was: Fionda, Allum, Callaghan, Anderson, Wilson, O'Donnell, McMenemy, McGowan, McKenzie, Ogunmade.

The young Tangerines started well coming close in 13 minutes when McGowan went close. Five minutes later, United took the lead when Callaghan crossed from the left wing, McMenemy headed back and McKenzie finished off the move.

Disaster struck United in a five minute period when they lost three goals in just five minutes. Firstly in the 22nd minute, a Watson corner for Aberdeen went through Fionda's hands and into the net to equalise for the visitors. A minute later, Michie ran through and chipped the keeper to make it 1-2 and then three minutes following their second, Duncan ran between two defenders to shoot past Fionda to put Aberdeen firmly in control.

Watson, Michie (from a penalty) and McHattie all scored in the second half as the Dons eased into the next round.

United had gone into this match in anticipation of a competitive encounter but one that they could win. In the end, they were well beaten and must now pick themselves up and attempt to build on their fifth top position in the Under-18 League.
