Glasgow 0 Dundee United Women 4

Dundee United FC Women created history with their first-ever SWPL win after a four goal victory at Glasgow on Sunday.

Two goals from Cassie Cowper and Tammy Harkin had United ahead at the break with Jade McLaren and Rachel Todd completing the scoring at New Tinto Park.

Graeme Hart made one change from the draw with Motherwell as Claire Delworth dropped out due to illness with Johan Fraser taking her place.

United started the game off well and could have been ahead after three minutes when Tammy Harkin rattled the bar but the midfielder being adjudged as offside anyway.

At the other end, Emma Craig sliced wide for the hosts.

Dominant

Rachel Todd netted for Dundee United FC Women against Glasgow

But United were dominant and had the ball in the net in ten minutes, only for it to be called offside again.

Six minutes later, Johan Fraser and Danni McGinley combined to set Harkin up but her effort was tipped round the post by Glasgow keeper Molly Reeve.

Eve Donald then saw a header land on the roof of the net against her former side and McGinley also headed off target.

United broke the deadlock on 34 minutes. The goal carried a slice of luck as Cassie Cowper’s free kick from near the halfway line bounced in front of Reeve and over the stranded keeper.

Two minutes later the advantage was doubled. Cowper was again involved as Harkin met her corner to head into the top corner.

United stepped up a gear in the second half and were relentless in the first fifteen minutes no fewer than ten chances.

Harkin and Robyn Smith fired off target in the first sixty seconds before Lisa Ryan headed wide at the back post a minute later.

Just three minutes after the restart, United were three ahead as McGinley played McLaren through and she calmly slotted home.

Harkin headed over a Cowper corner and Fraser was agonisingly close to reaching a McGinley ball across the face of goal.

McLaren couldn’t find the target with two changes and another McGinley crossed was diverted just wide by Neve Guthrie as United kept up the pressure.

It was then third time lucky for McGinley as her persistent assistance finally paid off with Rachel Todd in the right place to meet a McGinley cross and tap home and make it 4-0.

Emma Craig came close again for Glasgow shortly after but couldn’t test Fiona McNicoll with her effort.

Harkin saw herself denied again by Reeve in the 66th minute before lashing over three minutes later following good play by United.

As the game wore on, United had further chances to make the win more emphatic.

On 75 minutes, Guthrie found herself past a static defence but she could only hit the side-netting from a tight angle.

In the dying embers of the match, United kept looking for more goals and came close as McGinley and McLaren were denied by Reeve on five occasions in the last ten minutes.

It was, however, an excellent landmark first-ever top flight win for Graeme Hart’s side who have claimed four points from six so far this term.
