IT'S 'SHIRE OR FORRES IN CUP DRAW

9th December 2001

The Highland League's Forres Mechanics, who reportedly dominated their Scottish Cup second round tie, or Third Division East Stirlingshire will be United's opponents following Saturday's 1-1 draw at Firs Park and today's Scottish Cup third round draw at Hampden.

The Tannadice tie will be played on the weekend 5/6 January 2002.

Elsewhere in the draw two of United's SPL opponents will be eliminated with Dunfermline Athletic taking on Motherwell and St. Johnstone hosting Aberdeen whilst one of the best ties of the round will be at Rugby Park when Ian McCall's First Division high-flyers Airdrieonians travel to face Killie.

Gordon Haig, Jim Kilgannon, Jock Wallace, Russell Craig, Jim Riddell, Alan Rodgers, Tommy Lumsden, Kenny Dowds, Doug Coutts, Frank Christie, Sammy Reid and Alan Ainslie are immortal names - for Berwick Rangers supporters. 'The Borderers' team which defeated Rangers 1-0 on 28 January 1967 still epitomises the shock nature of the Scottish Cup and these twelve men may just get a mention or two in the press over the next four weeks as today's draw also included 'Berwick Rangers v Rangers'.

The full third round draw is as follows:
Arbroath v Inverness Caledonian Thistle
Albion Rovers v Livingston
Dundee v Falkirk
Kilmarnock v Airdrieonians
Hamilton Academical v Raith Rovers
Gala Fairydean v Forfar Athletic
Berwick Rangers v Rangers
Queen's Park or East Fife v Partick Thistle
Clyde v St. Mirren
Deveronvale or Spartans v Ayr United
Heart of Midlothian v Ross County
St. Johnstone v Aberdeen
Dunfermline Athletic v Motherwell
Stranraer v Hibernian
UNITED v EAST STIRLINGSHIRE or FORRES MECHANICS
Alloa Athletic v Celtic
