United struggled against Celtic as their disappointing run of form continued. A goal for the visitors within the first few minutes gave Celtic the upper hand right from the start and the Champions were never in any real danger of taking anything other than three points from this encounter. Griffin was out injured with McCracken (pictured) being brought into the defence. McCunnie, McConalogue and Carson dropped out replaced by Hannah, Venetis and young Marc Cocozza who made his first team debut in a match against his former employers.
John Hartson, who had broke his scoring duck in the SPL hitting the net against United at Parkhead earlier this campaign, demonstrated his determination to add to his goal tally right from the start and he took advantage of poor play by the home side just outside their own penalty box to smash in the opener from the right, the ball crossing Gallacher and into the net. The Welshman had the ball in the net again but was correctly ruled offside.
United's came back into the match and Thompson, ploughing once again a lone furrow up front, snapped a shot straight at Douglas. As United were gaining a greater degree of the share of possession, the centre of the defence was posted missing as Petrov ran into the six yard line unmarked to stroke home Celtic's second. Larsson almost hit a third with a clever chip shot that Gallacher did well to save.
The second half began as the first with a quick goal for the Glasgow side. Lauchlan gave away a free kick and Thompson scored for Celtic with a superb drive that swerved low in at the post past Gallacher. Larsson added a fourth and final goal of the match.
Derek Lilley came on as a substitute to end his injury nightmare but the bad dreams of the Tangerines against Celtic continued with the aggregate tally this season in two matches against the Parkhead side totalling one goal scored, nine conceded and no points. Martin O'Neil has a 100% record against United since he came to Scotland and United have taken only five points so far this season against the sides currently comprising the top six.
