Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Ross Docherty on a two-year deal, subject to SFA approval.

A combative yet technically gifted midfielder, Docherty began his career with Livingston after progressing through the youth system at Almondvale.

A brief stint with Airdrieonians followed, before going on to enjoy spells at Somerset Park and Firhill.

Throughout his career, the 30-year-old has racked up over 150 appearances in the Championship.

He has led both Ayr United and Partick Thistle to the League One title as club captain, and was a key figure for the Jags last season as they defied the odds to reach the final of the cinch Premiership Play-Offs, narrowly missing out on back-to-back promotions.

Docherty, who will join the rest of the squad on Thursday when pre-season training begins, becomes Jim Goodwin’s first signing as United Manager as he looks to rebuild ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

'EXACTLY THE TYPE OF PLAYER REQUIRED'

Upon the announcement, Goodwin expressed his satisfaction in reaching an agreement for the services of Docherty for the upcoming two seasons.

"Last season, Ross was one of the outstanding midfielders in the Championship and his consistent level of performances with Partick Thistle caught our eye.

"He is exactly the type of player required to succeed in this league - he's very comfortable both with and without the ball, very fit and brings additional experience to the squad.

"I have no doubt he will fit in seamlessly with the group of players we are building together ahead of an exciting season.

Chief Executive, Luigi Capuano, added “We’re delighted to secure Ross’ signature and welcome our first summer signing to Tannadice.

“Myself and the board have been working closely with Jim on a number of targets and getting Ross in the door was an important part of the Manager’s plans.

“Over the coming weeks, we will continue working behind the scenes to ensure the squad is as strong as possible in time for the 2023/24 campaign.”
