Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Liam Grimshaw on a two-year deal, subject to SFA approval.
Born in the Midlands, Grimshaw progressed through the youth ranks with English Premier League side Manchester United.
However, his first taste of senior football came north of the border when he made a loan switch to Fir Park at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign.
A positive temporary stint with the Steelmen laid the foundations for a permanent move further down the line, and Grimshaw would go on to cement himself as a fans’ favourite in Lanarkshire thanks to his tenacious, all-action style of play.
Throughout his time with Motherwell, the full-back, who can also play in midfield, made over a century of top-flight appearances and was an integral part of squads that made two domestic cup finals and secured European football.
Following his departure from the Well, Grimshaw put pen to paper on a short-term deal with Greenock Morton in September 2022.
The 28-year-old played every single league minute for the west coast outfit, who ultimately found themselves denied a place in the cinch Premiership Play-Offs by goal difference on the final day.
Furthermore, Grimshaw was given individual recognition for his role in a successful season by the supporters and his colleagues, scooping both the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Year award.
'Versatile'
He becomes Jim Goodwin’s second signing this week as the United Manager continues to improve his squad ahead of this season’s promotion bid.
“Liam is a fantastic, versatile player who I have admired for many seasons, and we believe he’ll bring a different dynamic to the group,” said Goodwin.
He continued: “He possesses all the technical attributes needed to impose himself on matches in a variety of roles across the pitch, whilst also displaying aggression, bravery and strength in the defensive phase to solidify our backline.
“Another vital aspect of bringing Liam to the club is that we add another senior figure within the dressing room with very good leadership qualities – a crucial factor in our pursuit of promotion this season.
