It’s time to get our teeth into some competitive action as we begin our assault on the Viaplay Cup with a trip to the capital to clash with The Spartans.
Opponent Overview - The Spartans
Fresh off the back of a historic promotion from the Lowland League, The Spartans are set to embark on their maiden season in the SPFL pyramid.
Blair Henderson, who netted 18 goals for the Ainslie Park outfit last term, converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory over Albion Rovers in the Pyramid Play-Off Final.
During the summer transfer window, The Spartans have made three solid additions to their promotion-winning heroes.
The capture of vastly experienced midfielders Danny Denholm and James Craigen must be viewed as a coup, with the pair boasting more than 700 senior appearances between them.
The latter has netted three goals against the Terrors throughout his career, all of which came whilst plying his trade for Falkirk.
Former Albion Rovers defender Ayrton Sonkur also put pen to paper on a one-year deal in Edinburgh.
Eight players have departed however since the end of the 2022/23 campaign, therefore further reinforcements will be required should The Spartans wish to preserve their League Two status.
They open their league account on Saturday 5th August with a tough test against Clyde - relegated from the third tier last season.
Dougie Samuel’s men have contested two pre-season friendlies thus far and scored a whopping 11 goals without reply. Tynecastle FC succumbed to a thumping 8-0 defeat at Ainslie Park whilst Highland League side Brora Rangers were swept aside 3-0.
