For the first match of 2002 for these sides, a crowd of over 11,000 were in attendance comprising of around 500 United fans.
Having made an appearance as a substitute against Celtic at the weekend, striker Derek Lilley found a place in the starting line up partnering Jim Hamilton in the United attack. Jamie Fullarton also found a starting berth in midfield while on the bench, Alex Smith had long term injury victim Jim McIntyre and Jim Paterson, who came off the previous Saturday with a head knock.
The quality on offer throughout the ninety minutes was disappointing and real goal scoring opportunities were few and far between. The home side had the better of the first period but never really troubled Gallacher and half-time arrived with the score 0-0.
United came more into the game after the break although Colgan in the home goal had little to do. In a move that would eventually decide the match, Jim Paterson came on for Charlie Miller and some ten minutes later Jim McIntyre replaced Derek Lilley who had put in a power of work up front.
With just three minutes remaining, Paterson cut in from the left and fired in a shot that went into the Hib's net off the post and United were ahead. Jamie Fullarton was then sent off for a second yellow card. In an eventful closing period, Hibernian had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside.
This was a priceless three points for United and moved the Tangerines back up to eighth position in the SPL. Although Hibs did not deserve to lose, the men from Tannadice defended well and fought hard to win this match.
