BAD WEATHER ALLOWS MORE TIME FOR INJURIES TO CLEAR

30th January 2002

United Manager Alex Smith was in a philosophical mood after he had seen his plans to take his side through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup wrecked for the second time in four days when the Tannadice pitch was again deemed unplayable. "The Scottish Cup in Rounds Three and Four often coincides with the worst of the winter weather and this time around we have had a combination of torrential rain and blizzards. This can play havoc with the condition of pitches invariably causing a pile up of games and can start clashes between League and Cup matches. That said, we're hopeful that we can get the game on next Monday."

Alex was disappointed that the form that his side had recently been showing could now be disrupted. "It is always a major worry for my staff when you hit a run of form and the continuity of games is broken up by bad weather. I'm hoping that the next few days will be better allowing us to play the two matches on Saturday and Monday. In fact, the delay may actually work out in our favour as we attempt to get Danny Griffin (pictured) and Jim Hamilton, who have been out through injury, fit again enabling them to play when the matches take place."
