MANAGER URGES CAUTION IN CUP

28th January 2002

Following back to back victories over Dundee and St Johnstone, it was not surprising that United Manager Alex Smith was disappointed that Saturday's Cup tie against Hamilton had been postponed due to excess water on the pitch. "It is always a very disappointing feeling for players and fans alike when a match is called off. We must remain focussed and concentrate on the job in hand. With the draw for the Quarter-Finals having been made on Saturday evening, we now know who our next opponents would be should we defeat Hamilton although we have to get through against Ally Dawson's side to qualify for the next round and that will be a difficult task. The prospect for the winner of tomorrow's tie at Tannadice is a home match against Ayr United who on Saturday beat SPL side Dunfermline at Somerset Park by three goals to nil. That would be a difficult match as well especially as Gordon Dalziel's side have become knock-out competition specialists in recent years having reached the semi-finals last season and with a CIS Cup semi-final against Hibernian in prospect in the near future."

Alex knows that absolutely nothing can be taken for granted against Hamilton having had the opportunity to study the Cup results on Saturday. "There have been enough Cup shocks over the weekend to warn us of the dangers of complacency. We will have to take note of these upsets and approach Tuesday's match in a positive manner. The silver lining to the postponement is that it gives skipper Danny Griffin more time to get back to full fitness and while we have won four matches out of five without Danny, we want our captain back as soon as possible as he is such an influential player. We are also trying to have Mark Wilson fit again after his outstanding debut versus Dundee."

The manager felt that it was essential that the United support knew how much their backing had meant to the players as they collected full points against Dundee and St Johnstone. "It should never be underestimated how much the backing of the United fans contributes to the positive play of the team. They have turned out in tremendous numbers and everyone at the Club appreciates their support."

The match against Hamilton kicks off at 7.45pm and is pay at the gate. Season tickets are valid for this game.
