Milne joined United from Dundee Celtic Boys Club in 1976, making his competitive debut in the 1979-80 season. Despite quickly becoming a regular in the first team, he missed out on League Cup successes in 1979 and 1980.

The winger's reputation grew, and by 1982-83 he was enjoying the prime of his career. He netted no fewer than 16 league goals to aid United's charge towards the Scottish Premier Division trophy. Milne's spectacular chip in the title-clinching match at Dens Park is remembered as the most iconic moment in the club's history.

Furthermore, he excelled in Europe, scoring 15 goals in over 40 matches, and was part of the side that reached the European Cup Semi-Final in 1984.

Milne departed United for Charlton Athletic after 11 years at Tannadice, with spells at Bristol City and Manchester United following further down the line. He also turned out for West Ham United on loan in 1989 before retiring in 1991 after a stint in Hong Kong.

Although capped at Under-18 and Under-21 levels, Milne never made it to full international level, but he is often recognized as one of the best players never to have played for Scotland.

In recognition for his services in tangerine, Milne was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in January 2009.
