Bowman's football journey began in Edinburgh, starting with Salvesen Boys Club and a move to Hearts in 1980.
Despite his youth, he quickly became a regular, amassing over 150 appearances in just four-and-a-half years. United manager Jim McLean tried to lure him to Tannadice twice during this period.
In December 1984, Bowman moved to Coventry City for £170,000, playing in the English top tier, before Jim McLean finally secured his signature alongside Jim McInally in a joint £140,000 deal, financed by transferring Billy Kirkwood and Stuart Beedie to Hibs.
Bowman reached both the UEFA Cup and Scottish Cup Final in his first season at Tannadice, but unfortunately came out on the losing side. He would go on to score his first goal for the Terrors the following season, and collected two more Scottish Cup runner's-up medals in 1988 and 1991 respectively.
Finally, the midfielder and United's Scottish Cup fortunes changed in May 1994 as they finally secured the trophy with a 1-0 victory over Rangers at Hampden.
He stuck by the club after their relegation from the Premier Division the subsequent campaign, helping us regain top-flight status after just 12 months in the second tier - this loyalty saw 'Psycho' awarded with the armband and a testimonial against city rivals Dundee.
Despite his no-nonsense, all-action style of play, he was only dismissed four times throughout his time in tangerine.
After more than a decade with United, Bowman departed as the twilight of his career arrived, spending time with Raith Rovers and Forfar Athletic, whilst also venturing to Hong Kong to play for Yee Hope FC.
2010 brought his induction into the Hall of Fame, and he is now in his 16th consecutive season on the coaching staff at United.
