ALEX SMITH-ONLY TOTAL EFFORT WILL DO

4th January 2002

United Manager Alex Smith may have been delighted with his side having taken full points against Hibernian on Wednesday but it was the Tennents Scottish Cup that now captured his attention. "Having come off of a fine away win at Easter Road we now find that it is Scottish Cup time again. It is always good to be drawn at home. The fact that we face a Highland League side makes it absolutely vital that we approach the game in a professional manner. We must ensure that there are no slip ups."

Alex outlined why his players must be completely focused for tomorrow's match. "It is obvious that this will be one of their biggest ever matches and they will be highly motivated. It will be like a Cup Final for them. We have to play the game with higher ambition and we will have to concentrate and put all our efforts in to making the next round."

With so many players on the comeback trail from injury, the United Team Manager also viewed the match as an opportunity for some of the squad to get match fitness levels raised following long lay-off's from injury. "This game gives us the opportunity to get the players who have been out through injury onto the field and to get another game under their belt. Derek Lilley, Jamie Fullarton, Hasney Aljofree and Jim McIntyre (pictured) could all benefit. It may also be an opportunity to introduce a younger player."

Forres have someone on their books who Alex knows well. "I would like to welcome Gordon Connelly, the Forres Player Manager who was one of my young prospects when I was at Stirling Albion before Burnley took him. Gordon, who had a successful period at Dunfermline, has had a fine career in Highland League football and I am looking forward to welcoming him to Tannadice and to meeting him again."

The match kicks off at 3pm and is pay at the gate. Season Tickets are valid.
