UNITED SCORE FOUR IN SENSATIONAL FINISH

4th February 2002

With this evening's Fourth Round Tennent's Scottish Cup tie against visitors Hamilton Accies heading towards a replay this coming Wednesday, United sensationally netted four goals in the last ten minutes to claim a home Quarter-Final berth with Ayr United.

Alex Smith made only two changes to the side beaten by Kilmarnock just two days ago. Hasney Aljofree came back into the side but not at the expense of Jamie Fullarton who moved into the midfield. It was David Hannah who dropped to the subs' bench to make way in midfield for Fullarton while Stephen Thompson was also on the bench with Stephen McConalogue taking up an attacking berth.

United started the match the same way they had played against Kilmarnock and struggled to move up a gear in the very heavy conditions and by half time, it was Hamilton who had taken all the plaudits with a gutsy performance.

The visitors again took the initiative after the interval however United began to come more into the match with Charlie Miller, Tennent's Man of the Match, coming close to opening the scoring.

In the end, it was substitute David Winters who broke the deadlock and the hearts of Hamilton when he put the Tangerines in front with just ten minutes remaining. Within minutes another substitute, Steven Thompson, put United two up. Perhaps the goal of the evening came next when Thompson won a free kick on the edge of the Hamilton box and up stepped Hasney Aljofree to blast a cracking drive into the net. With just seconds left, Tommo netted his second and United's fourth to cap an amazing finish and send the Arabs home with some excellent goals to remember the evening by.

It was a sensational end to the match and a little hard on the Second Division side who had battled well and come close to scoring on more than one occasion.
