United started out with only one change from the line-up that lost to Celtic last week with David Winters claiming a starting berth alongside Charlie Miller and Steven Thompson in an attacking-looking formation and with Stuart Duff taking the place of the suspended Jamie McCunnie at full-back. Young Stephen O'Donnell found a place on the bench.
United started brightly with Jim Lauchlan missing a golden opportunity to put the Tangerines ahead when his header beat the Hibernian keeper Tony Caig but hit the post and stayed out. Venetis then found space coming in from the left wing and had a chance to shoot but elected to cut the ball across the goal and an excellent opportunity for United came to nothing. Hibs gradually clawed their way back into the game and a spectacular goal on the volley from Frederic Arpinon put Hibs ahead - a lead they held until half time.
In the second half Hibernian contained Dundee United in true Bobby Williamson style restricting the United side to very few opportunities and, in fact, it was Hibernian who went further ahead midway through the second half when an O'Connor shot took a serious deflection and went past Dundee United's goalkeeper Paul Gallacher. United pushed forward and Steven Thompson pulled one back with a header with under fifteen minutes left on the clock. Following this, there was an intense spell of United pressure however they could not claw back an equaliser.
This was a match where United deserved at least a draw with Tony Caig making a few spectacular saves for the visitors during the game. Stuart Duff was the sponsor's man of the match.
