SMITH - EXPERIENCED PLAYERS TO PLAY THEIR PART

11th March 2002

Whilst providing team and supporters with a much-needed confidence boost, Saturday's edifying first team result at Tynecastle left Manager Smith in no doubt as to what to expect from his players in the remainder of the League campaign. Back at his desk on Monday, Alex maintained: "The players responded in the only way possible to our dismal Cup exit to Ayr last week, and that is by fighting back. They put in a gutsy and inspiriting performance which hopefully gives our supporters some faith in better things to come. We played some excellent football in the first half, and stuck to our guns in the second after Hearts came back into the game. And, most importantly, we got the victory we needed."

"But there is no doubt that we need to find some real consistency in our game", the Manager conceded. "Having said that, both Charlie Miller and Paul Gallacher were yet again outstanding, which helps to steady us. I am also looking to other key players, such as Jim Lauchlan and Danny Griffin to carry us forward in this aspiration. And, as I already intimated last week, we are searching desperately to bring in one or two players with the necessary type of experience to assist us in this particular regard."
