THOMPSON & GALLACHER SELECTED AS SUBSTITUTES

21st May 2002

Scotland's disappointing performance versus South Korea last week led their new Manager to make changes in both formation and personnel, resulting in United's players coming close to deployment as substitutes. In the end, their aspiration to earn a cap on Vogts's Far East tour were yet again deferred, owing quite likely to vastly improved performance of Berti's team.

After the match, the German maintained that his side would have deserved at least a draw whilst South Africa were fortunate to win. For Paul Gallacher, the wait for his first cap continues after having been involved in the national squad many times now. Tommo will be eager to add to his two caps and with only one goal from the two tour matches to date, he may stand a good opportunity of featuring in the next match against the Hong Kong side.

The Scotland side that featured against South Africa was as follows:

Douglas, Ross, Weir, Dailly (captain), Caldwell (Wilkie 46), Johnston (McFadden 60), Gemmill (Stewart 85), Dobie, Kyle, Stockdale (Alexander 68), Williams (Severin 77).
