The Tannadice level of imports has risen again, with guests from South America joining the recent additions from Europe and Central America, as United continue to search the globe in their bid to turn their fortunes around. Last week's capture, Argentinian Gustavo Fuentes, was joined by weekend signing Marcelino Galoppo, also from Argentina, in Sunday's starting line-up against Rangers at Ibrox. And another South American, Uruguayan international midfielder Carlos Marcora, was stripped for action but unused on the Tangerines bench.
Marcora was immediately pencilled in for Under-21 league duty against the 'Gers at Tannadice - and was joined by yet another Argentine trialist in Alex Smith's line-up. Explained the United boss, "Of those mentioned, only Fuentes is signed long-term, the remainder being tied up under short-term agreements with get-out clauses on either side. And we won't stop bringing in players from both at home and abroad who we reckon will improve things here at Tannadice. Make no mistake about it, we will turn things round".
Smith, who heads out on Scotland Under-21 duty with his Tannadice assistant Maurice Malpas this week, admits that he is delighted to welcome a weekend domestic break. He pointed out,"with Dave Hannah and David McCracken sidelined by injuries at Ibrox, the break could prove to be a timely one for us." Also involved on Under-21 League business alongside Marcora were Alphonse Tchami and comeback men David Worrell and David Partridge.
