Alex Smith's top team squad got the exercise they were desperately seeking when completing a closed-doors affair against far-travelled visitors Ross County at Tannadice.
The United gaffer admitted to being more than satisfied at the players' abilities to shrug off any mid-winter blues in what was a comfortable victory. He commented, "We did well, and showed progress from our previous friendly games of last week."
Doubtless encouraged by news that this coming weekend's Cup trip to face either Keith or Montrose now looks likely to go ahead, Smith fielded almost his strongest side. That meant no place for either of his Tannadice guests Raul Sanchez or Steve Hunt.
There were more than a few well-known faces amongst the Ross County squad, including former United players Mark Perry and Owen Coyle, and ex-Dundee defender Brian Irvine. Boss Smith voiced his delight that the Keith-Montrose clash now appeared to have beaten the weather. "We have to be delighted that we are likely now to get some competitive action prior to the city derby game against Dundee".
