COMBE CLEARS HIS NAME

19th February 2001

Justice was done by the SFA's Disciplinary Committee on Monday when it was decided no further action should be taken against United goalie Alan Combe following December's controversial SPL fixture at Hibs.

Combe was effectively red-carded after that 1-0 defeat for confronting assistant referee Jim McBride as the teams left the pitch. That led to a two-match ban, but more seriously also saw him accused of attempting to head-butt the official - a charge that was strenuously denied. And that appeared to be accepted by the Committee when Combe appeared before them at Hampden.

That delighted both player and Club and everyone at Tannadice was pleased to be able to close the door on the affair. "We disciplined Alan for shouting at the linesman, but knew he had not tried to touch him. We are pleased that has been accepted and he can now concentrate on winning his place back from Paul Gallacher, who has been in outstanding form," said boss Alex Smith.

Combe himself thanked fans, the Club and officials from Hibs, who witnessed the incident for backing him in his struggle to clear his name.
