ROBINSON WELL-KNOWN TO SMITH

20th February 2001

Wimbledon striker Paul Robinson breezed into Tannadice on Tuesday as United's latest bid to bolster the top team squad for the vital League and Cup dates to come.

The 22- year-old signed on the dotted line on a three-month loan-deal which boss Alex Smith feels will add to his frontline options. United Manager Smith said, "I first saw him star for the Newcastle reserves a few years ago, and was not surprised when Paul Sturrock tried to bring him to Tannadice. Since then I have checked on a couple of Newcastle youngsters in my capacity as Scotland Under-21 coach, and on each occasion it was Paul who has stood out. I believe that he can supply us with the cutting edge we have lacked in recent weeks".

The youngster, whose career began alongside Jason de Vos at Darlington, moved on to St James Park before a fee of 1.5 million pounds changed hands to take him to Wimbledon where he failed to win favour. He was delighted with Tuesday's move to Tayside. He pointed out, "I am here to get first-team games, and hope at the same time to help United in both League and Cup".
