DIFFICULT TIE EXPECTED AT FIR PARK

16th February 2001

Despite losing the services of influential midfielder Ged Brannan, United boss Alex Smith reckons that Scottish Cup hosts Motherwell will provide a stern test on Saturday.

The Fir Park side will be slightly under-strength but Smith feels this kind of situation only serves to hand fringe players an incentive to stake their claim. He said, "I am sure Motherwell will regret seeing Ged moving on, and they will also be without Don Goodman and Greg Strong for the Cup tie. But so often in football I have seen other players coming in to grab their chance and end up playing out of their skins. So rest assured it will be a very tough tie for us."

"That said, it is an attractive looking fixture and one that I am confident we can do well in. Dundee United supporters have come to expect their team to be in and around semi-finals and finals. That is our aim and a good cup can also further boost morale in our League campaign".

David Hannah and Tony Smith have been added to the Tangerines' squad, while the boss considers making one or two changes to the starting eleven after losing the points at Dunfermline last week. Hasney Aljofree may come into the midfield, and striker Beto Naveda is in with a shout of being handed a starting jersey.
