Boss Alex Smith has expressed delight at the performances of 'first team fringe players' in United's Under-21 victory over their St Mirren counterparts at Tannadice on Monday. In particular, Argentinian Beto Naveda earned praise for his role as an attacking midfield player.
Smith said, "Beto is very comfortable in that position and it's reassuring to know that if something happened to Charlie Miller we can call on the likes of Beto to do a job there. Tassos Venetis is another who can occupy that berth and I do feel the lad is growing in confidence and maturity. He will be a better player when he next gets his chance again in the first team."
Scoring strikers Steven Thompson and Paul Robinson also took plaudits from the Manager, but in the case of the on-loan Wimbledon striker, his red card near the end of the game renders him unavailable for Sunday's Scottish Cup tie with Rangers.
Smith commented, "Paul's sending off means he will be suspended for the Cup match due to the nature of the offence. It's the risk you take when you play first team players in official reserve fixtures - the same rules apply. But Paul knew that and should have been more careful. He's not a malicious lad though, more enthusiastic, but it's disappointing he misses out against Rangers."
