Pat Onstad was finally on the move today when he signed for Rochester Raging Rhinos, his former A-League team, after a disappointing eighteen month spell with United.
He is returning to the team where he was A-League goalkeeper of the year in 1998 and during the 1998 and '99 seasons achieved 26 shutouts in 47 games and conceded just 26 goals.
Pat leaves behind an entry in the Tannadice record books as the first player to win international caps without making a single first-team appearance. For that reason alone he was delighted to be back in New York State. "First team football, finally," he said today in Rochester. "I'm very happy, very happy."
The six-foot-four 'keeper from Vancouver had arrived at Tannadice on 25 October 1999 after considerable work permit difficulties had delayed his transfer. He continued to be capped for Canada but after eleven months at Tannadice he had yet to make his first team debut due to the combination of consistent displays by Alan Combe and some untimely absences due to international commitments or injury.
A move to FC Copenhagen fell through in September 2000 and after that elevation to the first team at Tannadice continued to elude Pat.
On 9 March 2001 it was confirmed that the Club were holding talks with American ruling body MLS to allow Pat to return across the Atlantic and allocate him a club there. However none of the offers made to Pat by the MLS were acceptable to him and instead he today opted for the A-League and a return to the Rhinos.
