ROBINSON IN RECKONING

13th March 2001

New boy Paul Robinson has answered Manager Alex Smith's calls to play his way into contention for a First Team start. The on-loan Wimbledon striker scored twice in Monday night's U-21 win at Dunfermline. He arrived at Tannadice last month with view to strengthening the goal threat, but the form of the First Team generally - and strikers Jim Hamilton and Derek Lilley in particular - have restricted Robinson's involvement to a couple of substitute appearances. But his performance at East End Park this week further stepped up his bid for a top team starting jersey.

As Smith stated, "Paul played well and scored a couple of fine goals. He is sharp up front and has a lot to offer and certainly comes into my thoughts for Saturday's game against Aberdeen. But the side has a solid look about it just now so changes will be minimal."

One enforced change, however, will be to the midfield due to Dave Hannah's suspension. Candidates to occupy that left-sided berth include Hasney Aljofree, Tony Smith, Hugh Davidson, and Greek Under-21 cap Tassos Venetis who was impressive against the Pars second string.

"Tassos performed superbly well and I think fans will see a difference in his confidence when he gets his chance again in the First Team."

Back from illness, defender David Partridge was sent off in the U-21 affair, but his penalty points will not affect first team duty.
