WRIGHT NEARS COMEBACK

7th March 2001

Defender Stephen Wright's long injury absence should end next week when he turns out for the Under-21s at Dunfermline. The former Aberdeen and Rangers fullback has been out since being carried off against Hearts in mid-October. He is now back training with the first team squad and has been pencilled in as part of the game at East End Park on Monday night.

Manager Alex Smith sees his progress as a big boost. "Stephen is quality, he showed that in his games for us before he got injured, and it is great to see him getting close to fitness again," said Alex. "It's been a long haul and we've had him working in water and with the physio for a while before we've let him near the group, but he's back with them now and looking okay. Having him in the squad again will give me another option at right back and give cover for the central positions."

On the downside it has been confirmed that midfielder David Hannah will miss the next two league matches through suspension. On Wednesday afternoon United played a closed-door friendly at Hibs, when several fringe players were given a run out.
