WEBSTER’S ‘NO’ TO UNITED MOVE

28th March 2001

Although disappointed that young Arbroath defender Andy Webster turned down the offer of a move to Tannadice, United boss Alex Smith was not prepared to dwell on the issue. The Clubs had agreed a deal, but Webster called the Manager on Tuesday night to say he would not be signing for United. Smith's only comment on the matter was, "I believe we were offering him a great chance to further his career by coming here but he has stated he doesn't think this is the right move from him, so that's the end of it as far as I am concerned." With international commitments and the Webster affair both done and dusted, Smith's main focus is now on Saturday's SPL visit to Ibrox to face Rangers. Craig Easton has shrugged off a strain he picked up on Scotland Under 21 duty last week, but Hugh Davidson is struggling to make the Ibrox date due to an ankle knock. With Hasney Aljofree still out, Davie Hannah suspended, and David Partridge not long back after illness, there appears to be a lack of available left-sided players to face the champions. "We still have a few options," said Smith." Venetis can come in which might mean Easton moving to the other side, or the likes of Tony Smith can do a job in that are of the park. "I'll be giving thought as to how to approach the game tactically."
