SAINTS’ MATCH SIGNIFICANCE STRESSED

2nd March 2001

Manager Alex Smith has called on his players not to waste their good work of recent months when bottom club St Mirren visit Tannadice on Saturday. United moved off the bottom of the SPL last weekend and Alex wants their goal difference advantage over the Buddies turned into points after this clash. "I've been stressing all week that there will be nine important games after this one, but we know this is a significant match", he said. "The players have done very well to close what was a big gap at one point and get off the bottom. It would be mad if they wasted that." Alex will finalise his line-up close to kick-off, but it is looking increasingly likely that striker Paul Robinson will be handed his first start, though Beto Naveda is also in the frame.
