NEW DEAL FOR JAMIE MCCUNNIE

6th April 2001

United have been handed another boost prior to the vital SPL meeting with Hearts on Saturday. Following Alex Smith being awarded Bank of Scotland Manager of the Month for March earlier in the week, the next piece of good news came in shape of teenage full-back Jamie McCunnie, who has signed a new contract.

McCunnie's fresh deal extends to the end of the 2003/2004 season and is a just reward for the 17 year-old's rise to prominence in recent months.

Explained manager Smith, "Jamie was playing in the first team, has shown great promise and this new deal suits everyone concerned. Jamie knows he still has a lot to learn but hopefully this will help bring him on to big things in the game." The young full-back is set to start his 13th consecutive first team game against the visitors from the capital.

David Hannah may be handed a starting jersey after his impressive substitute appearance at Aberdeen in midweek. There are no new injury concerns, and striker Jim Hamilton has a chance of shrugging off his achilles problem in time. "The defeat at Pittodrie is a stark reminder to the players that a lot of work is needed yet, and picking up points against Hearts is even more important now," added Smith.
