There was disappointment at Tannadice on Monday, but no room for self-pity as thoughts turned from Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to the battle to stay in the SPL.
Manager Alex Smith, who gave the players the day off, praised their effort and commitment in Sunday's last four defeat against Celtic at Hampden but rather than dwell on the past, he was looking forward to next Monday's important league clash with St Mirren at Love Street.
He believes victory in that one would all but secure United's place in the top flight next term. "I've seen people say it's a relegation decider, but if we draw we will still be four points ahead of them with a superior goal difference and even if we were to lose we would have the advantage," said Alex. "If we win, though, I'd expect the final four games to take care of themselves."
Alex will have to make changes for that game as both Charlie Miller and Jamie McCunnie are suspended. On Monday night Jim Paterson was due to continue his come back from a broken leg with half an hour of the action in the under-21's Tannadice clash with Hibs.
