Manager Jackie McNamara spoke of his pride in the performance of both the players and the fans in Sunday’s epic William Hill Scottish Cup quarter final. Despite being down to nine men, the Terrors battled to a draw and were less than twenty minutes from securing a memorable win.
He said, “We were up against it, shall we say, a lot of things went against us but I am delighted to still be in the cup.
“The performance was heroic in that sense because it was wave upon wave of attack after we went down to nine men. The fans played their part also. The backing we received throughout the game, but particularly in that second half when we had our backs to the wall, really inspired the players.”
Jackie also praised his players’ performance before Paul Dixon’s sending off three minutes into the second half. He felt the team had limited Celtic to very few opportunities and were causing problems to the Celtic defence and this gives great confidence looking ahead to this Sunday’s league cup final between the teams.
“It will be a different game on a different pitch, one conducive to good passing and that will mean a different game but we limited Celtic to only one or two chances throughout the game and the lads will get some confidence from that.
“We have a wonderful opportunity ahead of us. We will have almost 18,000 fans backing us and this is a chance for the players to become heroes for Dundee United. We have the chance to bring the trophy back to Dundee and all focus is now on that.”
There are still some tickets available for the South Stand ahead of the game and the ticket centre will, in addition to the usual times, be open from 9am until 4pm on Saturday to allow purchase and collection of Cup Final tickets. Tickets can also be purchased online or by phoning 01382 833166 (option 1 or 3)
