Police Scotland Travel and Safety Advice

13th March 2015

Police Scotland is advising football supporters to plan their travel ahead of Sunday’s Scottish League Cup Final between Dundee United and Celtic at Hampden on Sunday 15 March. With many fans travelling from the north-east of the country, as well as the central belt, roads and trains are expected to be busier than normal. As safety is a priority for Police Scotland, supporters are being asked to behave responsibly whilst travelling and in and around the stadium in Glasgow and to also be aware of the law in relation to alcohol and disorder so they can concentrate on enjoying the football. With a large number of supporters expected to be at the game, the priority for the Force is safety. Officers will be carrying out high-visibility patrols to help ensure that everyone gets to and from the match safely. It’s important to remember that drinking alcohol in public is illegal as is drinking on a coach, minibus or train travelling to the game. As well as working with officers from British Transport Police, additional Police Scotland officers will be on duty in the city and will be patrolling the roads to minimise disruption and congestion on major routes. Supt Jim Coubrough, Match Commander for the Scottish League Cup Final, is looking forward to the day. He said today: “Sunday will be a very exciting day for Scottish football and I hope that everyone who is going to the final will enjoy the experience. “Our job is to ensure that there is a safe and secure environment for fans to enjoy the match. We will be ensuring that there is minimum disruption to those who live, work and socialise in the city centre and in and around the stadium.” “The city has played host to a number of high profile games in recent months. As with other matches, it will be policed appropriately to ensure that we keep people safe. Enjoy the day – don’t ruin the occasion by not getting in to see the game.” A British Transport Police spokesman said: "The League Cup Final between Dundee United and Celtic promises to be a great match and fitting occasion for both teams and sets of supporters. "If you're travelling by train to Hampden Park in Glasgow be aware that many ScotRail services, including specials, will have alcohol restrictions in place. This is for a very good reason. We want everyone to arrive safely, securely and on time and without encountering alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour which could spoil your day, or someone else's, unnecessarily." A77 south of Girvan Road Works: Please note there are significant road works on the A77 south of Girvan. The road will be closed to all traffic before the match, with a significant detour in place. The road will be closed following the match with the exception of supporter’s buses. Normal vehicular traffic will NOT be permitted. The permitted coaches listed below will be allowed passage though the road works (southbound only) Coach hire for football traffic (Celtic vs Dundee United Cup final)

Parking: Parking is controlled by a temporary traffic regulation order (coned areas). On street parking should only be utilised out with restricted areas as a tow-away scheme is in operation for illegally parked vehicles. As a result, there is limited parking available in the vicinity of the stadium; supporters are encouraged to travel via train where possible. Celtic supporters using rail services should travel via Kings Park station. Dundee United supporters using rail services should travel via Mount Florida station. Bus Parking: Dundee supporters’ buses will be directed to park Cathcart Road towards Queen’s Drive. Celtic supporters’ buses will be directed to park at Calder Street on the east side of the stadium.
