VITAL THREE POINTS

28th April 2001

United recovered from the disappointment of Monday night's defeat at St. Mirren Park by collecting another three points with a narrow 1-0 win over Motherwell today at Tannadice.

A stunning thirty-yard goal from Jamie Buchan kept the points at Tannadice but there were signs of tension in the Tangerines' play as Alex Smith admitted afterwards. "The pressure is on us but the players have responded really well. This was a vital win for us."

The win keeps United one point ahead of St. Mirren who also won today. Both clubs have home matches next week but Alex Smith refuses to spend the next three matches looking over his shoulder at events elsewhere. "As long as we're winning we'll be safe," the manager said.
