Celtic 4 United 0

18th March 2015

United's Scottish Cup journey is over for another season after falling to a 4-0 defeat in another fiery tie against Celtic. By Joe James In hope of freshening things up following Sunday afternoon's League Cup Final defeat at Hampden, United made three changes to the starting eleven as Nadir Ciftci, Blair Spittal and Chris Erskine came in for the suspended Sean Dillon and Paul Dixon whilst injury prevented Mario Bilate from retaining his place in the squad. Celtic made only one change to their cup winning team, Ronny Deila bringing in James Forrest for the suspended Stefan Johansen. Despite some neat play from United in the early stages of the match, it was Celtic who opened the scoring at 16 minutes when Jason Denayer's looping header flew into the net from an Anthony Stokes free-kick. United created their best opportunity of the match just five minutes before half time, Ryan McGowan's surging run on the right resulted in a cut-back to Ciftci inside the box, however, the striker was unable to pounce on the loose ball and give United an equaliser. Shortly after half-time and against the run of play, Celtic doubled their lead when Leigh Griffiths latched onto a defence splitting pass before volleying past Cierzniak from point blank range. Neat interplay from substitute John Guidetti and Kris Commons saw the latter fire into the roof of the net for a third. In the last ten minutes both teams had a player dismissed, the first being Anthony Stokes who was seen by referee Calum Murray elbowing John Rankin in the face and shortly after, McGowan too for a meaty challenge on Liam Henderson. With only a minute remaining of added time, Virgil Van Dijk dispatched a Deneyer cutback from close range into an empty net, giving the home side a fourth.
