United travel north to face Aberdeen on Saturday, looking to build on last week’s victory over Hamilton.
By Greg Watson
While a lack of confidence was apparent as that winless run went on, The Arabs will hope that the resilience that was shown to keep a clean sheet last time out will help spur the team onto a continued upturn in fortunes, as the Premiership season reaches the home straight.
United’s inability to prevent the concession of simple goals has been a real problem recently, and last week’s improved defensive performance – along with inspired goalkeeping from Radoslaw Cierzniak – will need to be repeated on Saturday, given the dangers likely to be posed by their hosts.
However, given the strong chance of the top four all qualifying for Europe this season, and with third place still a distinct possibility, United will want to use last week’s success as a springboard to put together a strong run of form. Victory on Saturday in the game-in-hand over Inverness would certainly be a big step in the right direction.
Mario Bilate made a positive impact after his introduction in the Hamilton game, and his return from injury could be a vital weapon against Aberdeen’s stingy back-line, especially given the absence of Ryan Dow.
John Souttar and Callum Morris were the defensive combination that guided United to a clean sheet last week, and it will be interesting to see if they will continue at centre-back this time out.
Whatever side the manager goes with on Saturday, an improvement in quality, along with a repeat of the battling resilience shown against Accies will be required to gain another victory against a strong opposition.
Victory would see real belief that third place could be ours.
