DEFENSIVE CHANGES LIKELY

25th April 2001

Tannadice boss Alex Smith is looking for his Tangerines to regain their 'mean streak' when Motherwell head in as SPL guests on Saturday.

Smith remains annoyed at the ease with which St Mirren plundered two goals from his defence in Monday's relegation zone defeat at Paisley. It now appears highly unlikely that he will name skipper Jason de Vos in his weekend starting line-up, The big Canadian will not return from international duty in the Middle East until Friday.

That leaves the door open for the likes of David McCracken and John Licina to forward their names as candidates for the central defensive vacancy. Smith argued, "It would be asking a lot of Jason to play a third game in what would be five days, when added to the travelling commitments. Luckily we do have alternatives in Licina and McCracken, while we could switch Danny Griffin into central defence from his midfield role."

Elsewhere in Smith's plans, the fitness levels of Jamie McCunnie and Charlie Miller will be of major interest on their returns from international duty in Poland. Both will step back into the starting eleven if fit.
