The season will draw to a close at Tannadice Park this Sunday lunchtime, but far from being a regular end of May affair, a bumper crowd and derby against local rivals Dundee brings to an end a campaign of ups and downs.

There is a lot more than bragging rights at stake as should United better St Johnstone’s result at Pitoddrie we will finish in fourth place for the second successive season.
The brighter points during the Tangerines' season have heavily featured derby wins over Dundee. In September two encounters within a week saw United come out on top in contrasting manner. Dens Park was the venue for the first league meeting where a dominant Terrors side ran out worthy 4-1 winners, while Jaroslaw Fojut’s injury time header at Tannadice days later earned a dramatic last gasp berth in the League Cup quarter finals. Then there was the January 1st clash at Tannadice which will not only be many supporters' stand out game of this season, but will be talked about for generations. After a frantic opening half saw United stampede their way into a 4-1 advantage, things were rounded off further after the break as they went on to secure a 6-2 win in front of a capacity crowd. This result now stands at the side's biggest ever win over their city rivals at Tannadice which is no mean feat given some of the memorable victories against Dundee in the past.
Following a disappointing result at Inverness last weekend which left the side relying on results elsewhere to have an outside chance of European qualification, expect boss Jackie McNamara to freshen up the team on Sunday. There are a number of first teamers ruled out until next season and this will pave the way again for some of the next generation to make a name for themselves. John Souttar, Charlie Telfer, Blair Spittal, Aidan Connolly and new signing Justin Johnston have all been involved recently and will be looking for the opportunity to sign off the campaign in style.
Whilst the players need to do their part the prospect of playing in front of a large Tangerine Army can once again prove an inspiration as it has done in our earlier encounters with Dundee this season. With a long summer to wait for the next competitive action, let’s hope for a great crowd and a great atmosphere. There would be no better way to end the campaign than to win a derby for a fourth time in the campaign.
By mid Sunday afternoon it would be great if we’re all celebrating just that!
Come on United!!
