Encouragement was the name of the game as far as Alex Smith was concerned in Monday's Under-21 league victory over Dundee here at Tannadice.
Several of his 'fringe' men took advantage of the occasion to remind their gaffer that they are still very much involved in challenges for places for the vital series of late-season fixtures ahead. While Jim Paterson's first full game for eight months came under the microscope, there were others too who impressed with their contributions to the more than comfortable 2-0 win over the Dark Blues youngsters.
Said Smith, "I am delighted to report that Jim suffered no reaction to what was an outstanding comeback appearance. But he was not alone in impressing me, Hugh Davidson, Tassos Venetis, David Winters and David McGuire were others to do well."
On the debit side, ex-Darlington winger Neil Heaney has suffered a setback to his bid to complete a recovery from a knee injury. Indications are that he has been ruled out of action until next season.
