First Team

Dundee United 1 Inverness CT 1

19th September 2015

United had to make do with a point at Tannadice today. The Terrors really dominated the first half but only had a Billy McKay goal to show for their dominance. They were made to pay when Meekings headed home a corner on the 55th minute to win his side a share of the spoils. By Gareth ScottĀ  Jackie McNamara made two changes to the line up from the one that started the harsh defeat to Kilmarnock. The experienced John Rankin returned and there was a place for Darko Bodul who looked impressive when he came on against Killie. Blair Spittal and Adam Taggart both had to be content with a place on the bench. Despite being an injury doubt prior to the game, Billy McKay lined up in attack against his former employers. First Half United started the game very positively and in the opening seconds Draper was booked for blocking a Fraser shot with his arm. Shortly after a Dillon cross looked like it came off the hand of Raven but the ball broke to McGowan who shot over the bar. With six minutes gone the home side took a deserved lead. Bodul broke forward quickly and he found Fraser who superbly set up McGowan. The Aussie crossed into the six yard box and Billy McKay forced the ball over the line from close range to score his second goal for the club. Ryan Dow then set up McKay but this time his shot was deflected and easily caught by the Inverness keeper. With 11 minutes on the clock United should have doubled their lead. Callum Morris broke through from just inside the visitors half and found the unmarked John Rankin. With only the keeper to beat he shot straight at Fon Williams and the danger was cleared. It was all United at this stage and McKay was unlucky when his lobbed effort went wide of target. Midway through the half John Rankin looked to put his previous miss behind him. Zwick's long throw was helped on by Bodul and after a pass to Rankin the United midfielder surged forward and fired a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target. McKay then pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box and his shot was tipped round the post by the goalkeeper. The resulting corner landed at the feet of Dow who flashed his shot well over. Second Half Inverness improved after the break and ten minutes into the half they were back in the game. Williams floated a cross to the back post and with Raven lurking Sean Dillon conceded a corner. Christie's second corner found Meekings at the back post and he headed home. With an hour gone Rankin fired in a shot that hit McKay, the ball fell to Fraser who saw his shot deflected for a corner. The resulting corner was headed into the side netting by Durnan. Inverness were beginning to look dangerous and a fine pass from Christie to Tremarco forced Zwick into making a fine save and then Williams follow up went just wide. A minute later Tansey powered in a long range effort that wasn't far away. With 12 minutes left Kuhl floated a free kick into the danger area which McGowan headed into the six yard box but the ball was taken by Fon Williams. Tansey again went close with a long range shot with time running out. Towards the end United sprung back into life and with four minutes to go they had the ball in the net. Spittal passed to McKay, who was in an offiside position, who then set up Murray who shot into the roof of the net but to the disappointment of the home support the linesman had his flag up. Summing Up - United will once again be disappointed by the result. The losing streak has come to an end but really the game could have been well out of sight at the interval and in the end they had to settle for a frustrating draw. Man of the match - Everything that United did well on the day went through Scott Fraser in midfield, who once again put in a very impressive display Teams: United: Zwick, Dillon, Morris, McKay, Rankin, McGowan, Dow (Spittal 65), Durnan, Fraser, Kuhl, Bodul (Murray 80) Subs : McCallum, Telfer, Connolly, Taggart, Donaldson ICT: Fon Williams, Raven, Tremarco, Vincent, Meekings, Draper, Devine, Tansey, Williams (Foran 81), Christie, Storey Subs : Esson, Lopez, Wedderburn, Horner, Polworth Referee : Kevin Clancy Click here for our Match Pictures Flickr Gallery.
