The home side opened the scoring just after twenty minutes, Leigh Griffiths latching onto a pass behind the United defence before converting from an acute angle.
Despite United looking relatively solid defensively throughout the first half, Boyata added a second when he headed a Stuart Armstrong free-kick into the back of the net.
Shortly before half-time Celtic were awarded a penalty, Scott Fraser adjudged to have brought down Tierney as the fullback was rushing into the box. Kris Commons was at hand to blast home the penalty.
Ten minutes into the second half, the clinical Commons doubled his tally, the midfielder drilling a thunderous effort into the top corner.
Scott Brown added a fifth with only two minutes remaining, waltzing past the United defence before poking a shot into the back of the net.
