SMITH ACKNOWLEDGES INTEREST IN TOMMY MCLEAN

9th May 2001

United boss Alex Smith has admitted that he was not surprised to learn that Rangers were interested in luring coach Tommy McLean away from Tannadice.

Speculation was rife that former Tangerines' boss Tommy had been approached to fill a vacancy in Rangers new-look youth development plans. "Although it is by no means certain that Tommy will be going anywhere, I can understand why there are envious eyes cast in his direction", commented Smith. "He is part of a coaching staff here at Tannadice which I rate to be amongst the very best in the country."

Looking ahead to the weekend, boss Smith was delighted to report returns to training on Wednesday of both Craig Easton and Dave Hannah. Easton had recovered from a recurring knee injury, while fellow-midfielder Hannah had shrugged off a stomach virus.

Still out though was young defender Jamie McCunnie who limped out of last weekend's big win over Dunfermline with an ankle injury. However, it is believed that all three will be available for selection for the latest 'vital' date for United in Saturday's Tayside derby meeting with St Johnstone at Perth.
