First Team

Defeat at Dens Park on Monday evening sealed United’s fate for this season and consigned the Club to at least one year in Scottish football’s second tier. The team will make the long trip north to Inverness tonight knowing that, irrespective of how many points they pick up in their final three games, bottom spot in the Premiership will be their final resting position. By Graeme Webster Following the bitter disappointment of Monday’s derby defeat, it is hard to muster a huge amount of enthusiasm for the third of our bottom six matches against Inverness Caley Thistle. However, with every cloud there is a silver lining. While Monday may have marked the effective end of this season, Friday should mark the start of a rebuilding process and hopefully better things to come for next season. Inverness Caley Thistle went through the same turmoil in 2009 when they were relegated from the top league and United will aim to replicate their response which was to bounce straight back up the following season as champions of the First Division. Everyone associated with Dundee United are hurting right now and what better way to alleviate the pain than by finishing the season with some positive performances and results, starting at the Caledonian Stadium tonight. With the pressure now lifted, it remains to be seen whether the team line up will be freshened up somewhat. One or two of the development squad who racked up a sensational 9-1 win on Tuesday evening against Hamilton may feel they deserve a crack at the first team. United haven’t beaten Caley in eight matches since our victory at Tannadice in March 2014. In the most recent outing against Inverness, Miles Storey and Iain Vigurs snatched the goals in a 2-0 home defeat. So, history suggests it wont be easy to take full points back down the A9. However, in the context of rebuilding some much needed confidence around the Club, three points would be most welcome! Come On United!
